Auto Transformers with the same power rating capability are less expensive than Isolation Transformers. Auto Transformers are very useful for voltage and or current step up or step down applications. Auto Transformers have some limitations. They are not a replacement for all isolation transformers requirements. L/C Magnetics can manufacture single phase or three phase Auto transformers up to 500 KVA power rating.  All units are custom designed and built to order. We have the proper tooling and winding machines to give you a fast turn around.

An example of savings by using a single phase 460 VAC to 480 VAC step up auto transformer is shown below:

• Voltage available for a 48 KVA input : 460 VAC, 104 amps, 1 PH (X1, X2)
• Voltage desired for a 48 KVA output: 480 VAC, 100 amps, 1 PH (X1, X3)
• The size of the auto transformer would be (480-460) / 480 * 48 KVA = 2 KVA approx.

Hence a 2 KVA size auto transformer will boost the 48 KVA power input from 460 VAC, 480 VAC.

The customer can purchase a cheaper 2 KVA unit instead of replacing the existing 48 KVA unit as shown below:

A similar savings for a three phase Auto Transformer is shown below:

• Voltage available for a 100 KVA input : 460 VAC, 125 amps, 3 PH (X1, X2, X3)
• Voltage desired for a 100 KVA output: 480 VAC, 120 amps, 3 PH (H1, H2, H3)
• The size of the auto transformer would be (480-460) / 480 * 100 KVA = 4.2 KVA approx.

Hence a 4.2 KVA size auto transformer will boost the 100 KVA power input from 460 VAC, 480 VAC.

The customer can purchase a cheaper 4.2 KVA unit instead of replacing the existing 100 KVA unit as shown below:

 

The Auto Transformers shown above do not provide the isolation between the primary and secondary winding, which is provided by an Isolation Transformer only. Please check with your electrician and city codes to see if an auto transformer is suitable for your application.

There are instances when a distribution transformer output is lower than nominal. One solution is to replace the Distribution transformer with a new one. This can be costly. Auto Transformers are very useful in such applications. The Auto Transformer is able to boost the output to the nominal value. The distribution transformer provides the necessary isolation, and auto transformer remedies the drop in the output voltage. This results in huge savings.

Auto transformers are divided into two categories: single phase and three phase.
