Single Phase Buck-Boost Transformer
L/C Magnetics provides a cost affective solution for many Buck-Boost Transformer Applications. One such transformer is described below.
- Voltage available for a 10 KVA output : 360 VAC, 1 PH (X1, X2)
- Voltage desired for a 10 KVA output: 480 VAC, 1 PH (X1, X3)
- The size of the auto transformer would be 480-360/480 * 10 KVA = 2.083 KVA approx.
Hence a 2.083 KVA Auto transformer unit will buck the 480 VAC, 10 KVA input to 380 VAC, 10 KVA output. The customer has to buy a cheaper 2.083 KVA unit instead of replacing the existing 10 KVA unit, as shown below.

Buck-Boost Transformers shown above do not provide the isolation between primary and secondary, which can be provided by an Isolation Transformer only. Buck-Boost transformer shown above is used as an auto transformer. It may not be a solution for all applications. Check with your electrician and city codes to see if an auto transformer circuit is suitable for your application.
There are instances, when a distribution transformer output is lower than nominal. One solution is to replace the Distribution transformer with a new one. This can be costly. Auto Transformers are very useful in such applications. Auto Transformer is able to boost the output to the nominal value. The distribution transformer provides the necessary isolation, and auto transformer remedies the drop in the output voltage. This results in huge savings.
If you wish to step up or step down your output voltage, a customized Buck-Boost auto transformer can offer you substantial savings. We can install the auto transformer in a suitable NEMA enclosure also. To discuss your specific application, please call us toll-free at (800) 595-7096.
