Buck-Boost Transformer definition: A buck-boost transformer is an electrical transformer with only one winding. In an buck-boost transformer, portions of the same winding act as both the primary and secondary. The winding has at least three taps where electrical connections are made. Buck-boost transformers have the advantages of often being smaller, lighter, and cheaper than typical isolation transformers, but buck-boost transformers have the disadvantage of not providing electrical isolation. Hence, buck-boost transformers are used in applications where electrical isolation is not a critical requirement.

buck-boost transformers are not a replacement for all isolation transformer requirements. L/C Magnetics can manufacture single phase or three phase buck-boost transformers up to 1000 KVA power rating. All units are custom designed and built to order. We have the proper tooling and winding machines to give you a fast turn around.

L/C Magnetics can provide buck-boost transformers as an open core and coil unit or enclosed in an indoor enclosure with corrosion resistant powder coating. We can also install the transformer in a NEMA 4X enclosure or a stainless steel enclosure.

An example of savings achieved by using a single phase 48 KVA power buck-boost transformer by boosting the output from 460 VAC to 480 VAC is shown below

  • Input voltage available: 460 VAC, 104 amps, 1 PH (X1, X2)
  • Output voltage desired: 480 VAC, 100 amps, 1 PH (X1, X3)
  • The size of the buck-boost transformer would be (480-460) / 480 * 48 KVA = 2 KVA.
  • Hence, the 2 KVA size buck-boost transformer will boost the 48 KVA input power from 460 VAC to 480 VAC. The equivalent isolation transformer would be a 48 KVA size.

The above buck-boost transformer is 48 / 2 = 24 times smaller than the equivalent isolation transformer.

The customer can purchase a cheaper 2 KVA buck-boost transformer instead of replacing the existing 48 KVA isolation transformer achieving the same results:

A similar savings for a three phase buck-boost transformer is shown below:

  • Voltage available for a 100 KVA input : 460 VAC, 125 amps, 3 PH (X1, X2, X3)
  • Voltage desired for a 100 KVA output: 480 VAC, 120 amps, 3 PH (H1, H2, H3)
  • The size of the buck-boost transformer would be (480-460) / 480 * 100 KVA = 4.2 KVA approximately. Hence the buck-boost transformer will be 100 / 4.2 = 23.8 smaller.
  • Hence a 4.2 KVA size buck-boost transformer will boost the 100 KVA power input from 460 VAC to 480 VAC.

There are situations where power supplied by the utility companies to the distribution transformer in a facility is either too high or too low from the nominal. This under voltage or over voltage condition has to be compensated. One solution is to replace the entire distribution transformer with a new one. This can be costly. Buck-boost  transformers are very useful in such applications. The buck-boost Transformer is able to boost or buck the output voltage to the nominal value. The distribution transformer provides the necessary isolation, and buck-boost transformer remedies the voltage difference in the output voltage. This results in huge savings.

The buck-boost transformers shown below do not provide the isolation between the primary and secondary winding. Please check with your electrician and city codes to see if an buck-boost transformer is suitable for your application.
